Churches to study Communion

September 1, 2012
The OBSERVER

St. John's United Church of Christ and First United Presbyterian Church of Dunkirk will be collaborating on a project that will explore a "deeper and broader understanding of the sacrament of Communion."

The members of the two churches have expressed an interest in the educational and experiential opportunities afforded to them in an ecumenical setting. The cooperation and fellowship will contribute to a profound understanding of the Lord's supper while maintaining the holiness, mystery and beauty of this sacrament.

All who are interested are welcome to join in for Bible studies and theological reflections. The program will begin on Sept. 11 at 12:30 p.m. and the second group will meet on Friday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. The first segment of the study will be conducted over 10 weeks, based on the Lord's Supper by Ralph Wilson. For more information, and to register for the sessions, contact the Rev. Thomas Lawton at 366-0710 or the Rev. Cheni Khonje at 366-2421.

Dr. Robin Knowles-Wallace will be conducting the workshops that are open to the public:

Church Musicians: Saturday, Sept. 22 at St. John's UCC, 2 p.m.

Church Members/ Public: Sept. 23 at St. John's UCC, noon

Clergy: Sept. 24 at First United Presbyterian Church, 10 a.m.

Register in advance as a meal will be served. All are welcome at Christ's table.

This program is made possible through a Worship Renewal Grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, Grand Rapids, Mich., with funds provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc.
