To the right of this view is a message from David Ortolano, Dunkirk police chief, that reminds motorists that school is open again in the city starting Wednesday.
Other districts, however, open today and it is imperative for all drivers to use extra caution with the additional traffic of buses on the roads as well as a number of children. When driving through school zones, it is a law you must slow down to 15 mph where posted.
Also, when buses are loading and unloading, motorists must yield to the flashing lights.
"A very strict reminder is being issued warning motorists that they must stop for school buses that have their red lights flashing," Ortolano writes. "All vehicles on the highway operating in any direction on single lane or multiple lane highways must stop before their vehicle reaches the school bus when the bus has its red flashing lights in operation."
It is not an option. It is the law.
Please be safe today - and until June - with area schools returning to session.
