OBSERVER Staff Report
An open house for parents and the public will take place later this week at Dunkirk High School.
According to Steve O'Brien, Dunkirk High School principal, the community, parents, grandparents and guardians are invited to a "Meet and Greet Open House" event from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday. While there, visitors are welcome to have discussions with staff and tour the improvements and additions to the facility on Sixth Street.
"The middle school has done this type of event for a couple of years," O'Brien said. "We really want the community to come in and take a look at the school because so much of the construction is done now."
Work on the $33 million district improvement projects began in 2009 and recently finished with the high school. Highlights of the tour will include the new gym, the turf football field, swimming pool and weight and exercise room. Most of these facilities will be open to the public through the district's Community Education Program.
In addition to the facilities tour, parents can meet the staff and learn about the various clubs and extracurricular activities that Dunkirk has to offer. Hot dogs and beverages also will be available at the event.
Students, who will have shortened classes in order for the event to take place, also are welcome to attend. "We want the kids to enjoy it as well," O'Brien said.
The event was put together by the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Committee.
Staff returns to the Dunkirk schools on Tuesday with the first day of classes taking place Wednesday.
