Around 12:10 a.m., sheriff's patrol came upon a vehicle crash that had just occurred on Water Street in the Village of Mayville. A vehicle operated by Gregory R. Best, 18, of Westfield, failed to negotiate a curve, crossed over the center of the roadway and struck a street sign.
During the investigation, Best failed sobriety tests and was arrested for driving while ability impaired (DWAI) with drugs. Best was also found to be in possession of a narcotic drug (prescription drugs) and a small quantity of marijuana.
Best was taken into custody for processing and charged with DWAI-drugs, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana, fail to reduce speed on a curve, and failure to keep right.
He was issued appearance tickets and will answer the charges in Chautauqua Town Court later.
Following an investigation, deputies filed for an arrest warrant for Benjamin J. L. Ernewein, 29, of Celoron, for two counts of second-degree harassment. It is alleged that Ernewein subjected two persons to unwanted physical contact during an altercation.
Ernewein was arrested on Aug. 27 and arraigned in the Town of Busti Court. He was released pending further court action at a later date.
On Aug. 31, deputies received additional information that one of the victims received an injury that required medical attention. Deputies filed a third-degree assault charge with the court, which will arraign Ernewein on at a later date.
Both subjects were also charged with trespassing at every business at which graffiti was made.
Around 4:45 p.m., Andrew Jenson 24, of Little Valley, was walking on Allegany Road in the Town of Hanover. Deputies on foot patrol observed Jenson to be allegedly in possession of an open container of alcohol.
Around 5:45 p.m., Michael R. Conway, 30, of Tonawanda, was walking on Iola Drive in the Town of Hanover. Deputies on foot patrol, noticed that Conway was allegedly in possession of an open container of alcohol.
Each were issued an appearance ticket, and will be in the Town of Hanover Court on a later date.
Byron K. Oaks, 24, of Dunkirk, was wanted by the sheriff's office for criminal possession controlled substance.
Oaks was arrested and remanded to Chautauqua County Jail and can be removed from the Chautauqua County wanted list.
