Lakeview Wins Gowanda Softball Tournament
The 16th Annual Gowanda Men's Slow pitch softball tournament was held on Sunday. Lakeview defeated the Gowanda Bandits in the final game to win the championship. Five teams were entered into the double elimination tournament. All games were played at the George Dispenza Memorial Field.
The Bandits coached, by Josh Lutz, defeated Hidi twice to reach the finals. But Lakeview's power and reliable defense was too much to overcome and the Bandits had to settle for a second-place finish. The Bandits played five games, the most by any team in the tournament.
Lakeview was led by Mike Weller while Jeff Johnston was the team's best player throughout the tournament. Lakeview won each of the three games that they played.
Dillon McMahon led the Bandits offensively and in the circle while Justin Wallschlaeger played outstanding defense at third base. Mike McKeever had the key hit in the Bandits' semifinal win while Nate Davis' play in centerfield helped seal the win.
Aaron Benton led Hidi's offense throughout the tournament. His brother Carter also had a key hit against Niagara Falls and was the youngest player at age 14 to play in the one-day event.
Hidi pitcher Rob Gaylord was the oldest player at the ripe old age of 60 and was joined on the Hidi team by his son Pete. Brian Denea and Rob Fetterick were also solid contributors for the Hidi team.
The 9th Annual Fall Classic will be the last tournament of the season. It will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6. Call Mark Benton at 532-4053 to secure the last spot in the tournament.
