Fredonia blanks Jamestown

JAMESTOWN - Visiting Fredonia (1-0, 1-0) defeated Jamestown High School (0-1), 5-0, in Division 1 girls tennis on Thursday.

Baylee Tarnowski, Georgianna Gens and Lauren Millson captured the singles while Dana Wirojratoma and Cheyanne Gifford and Marina Kessler and Sarah Zinni took the doubles for Fredonia.

Gowanda 4, Dunkirk 1

Gowanda got off to a fast start in girls' tennis with a 4-1 win over Dunkirk, Thursday in a CCAA Division 1 contest.

Jessica Sowa was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Josalyn Szwejbka in first singles.

"Josalyn had an off day today," Dunkirk coach Greg Catalano said. "She's usually a very, very good player."

Brittney Stelley kept the Lady Panthers rolling with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dunkirk's Christina Aviles in second singles.

Danielle Dean got the Lady Marauders' lone victory with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Kelly Konwiczka in third singles.

Gowanda swept the doubles matches. Jessica Sperling and Kelsey Herniman teamed to defeat Dunkirk's Crystal Mueller and Ally Clement, 6-1, 6-2 in first doubles and Giovanna Accordio and Brianna Chupa eased past Sidney Wiant and Yadera Bautista, 6-0, 6-1 in second doubles.

All four of Dunkirk's doubles players participated in their first career tennis match.

"We only have three returning starters," Catalano said. "We're really starting from scratch, but we have a nice group of girls. I'm doing a lot of teaching. We'll see if we can get some better scores, but I'm happy with their progress.

"It was a nice day for tennis," he added. "It's always a nice day for tennis."

Dunkirk returns to action today at Chautauqua Lake.

Chautauqua Lake 3, Maple?Grove 2

MAYVILLE - The Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds edged the Maple Grove Lady Red Dragons, 3-2, Thursday in girls' high school tennis action.

In second singles, Chautauqua Lake's Dori Ruff defeated Paige Bentham, 7-6(7-3), 6-2. In third singles, Chautauqua Lake's Jenelle Senske edged Christina Walker, 6-3, 7-5.

The Lady Thunderbirds' first doubles team of Charity Ludwig and Megan Stahlsmith handled Morgan Lehman and Sam Hallett, 7-5, 6-1.
