SILVER CREEK Registration for the Silver Creek Central School District's Community Education Program is currently underway for the fall 2012 session. It is not necessary to be a resident of the Silver Creek School district to enroll in these courses. For more information about a specific course, to pre-register by phone, or if interested in teaching a course, call 951-8111. Speak clearly and leave a name, phone number, and classes of interest.
After pre-registering, participants should then send in their money for the course, as they will only be contacted should a class be canceled due to inclement weather or insufficient enrollment, in which case their money will be refunded. There is a 15 percent senior citizens discount that will be honored for all participants 65 years of age and older, unless otherwise stated. Checks should be made out to SCCS Community Education and mailed to: Silver Creek CS, P.O. Box 270 Dickinson St., Silver Creek, NY 14136, Attn: Community Education. Classes will not meet when school is closed for a holiday or inclement weather.

What are those bumps in the night? Ghost Hunting 101 is being offered by Ashley Neumeister on three separate class dates, Oct. 18, Nov. 1, Nov. 15. Learn how to identify paranormal activity, debunk photos and video, use ghost hunting equipment. Information is presented by real, local paranormal investigators, from their actual case files. The class runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in room 137 HS and the fee is $20.
This year, for the first time, SCCS is offering three live interactive webinars. They are being conducted by James Farnham, MB, MS. All classes are online will take place on Nov. 10 and the fee for each is $30. They include - 20 Ways to Earn Residual Income, 9 to 11 a.m.; How to Build a Fun and Profitable Home-Based Business, noon to 2 p.m.; and How to Conduct a Webinar, 3 to 4:30 p.m. Before registering, visit www.jamesfarnham.com for important information about computer compatibility.
Aquacize will be offered by Jean Mahaney from 3:30 4:30 p.m. in the pool. Session one class dates are Sept. 20, 27, Oct. 2, 4, 16. The fee for session one is $20. Session two classes will be held Tuesday/Thursday in November and December. Specific class dates are dependent upon the success of the swim team and will be announced later in the fall. The session will include at least 10 classes and the fee will be $40.
Yoga/Pilates will be offered by Karen Bogosian on Thursday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. from Oct. 18-Nov. 15. Class will be held at The Backline, 19 Park Place, Silver Creek, and registration fee is $25.
Zumba will be taught by Kelli Gorman on Monday and Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. beginning Sept. 24 and running through Dec. 5. This course will be held in the Christ Chapel Wesleyan Church gymnasium, 64 Buffalo St., Silver Creek. The fee is $60.
Kelli Gorman will also be offering Zumba Toning on Monday and Wednesday from 5 to 5:30 p.m. in the Christ Chapel Wesleyan Church gymnasium. This course is designed for those who wish to learn how to blend body-sculpting techniques and Zumba moves into one workout. Participants much purchase 1 lb. Zumba toning weights on their own for about $15. This class will run from Oct. 1 through Dec. 5 and the fee is $50.
Introduction to Belly Dance is offered by Jennie Kaleta on Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for six weeks beginning Oct. 1. Class will be held in the elementary gymnasium and the fee is $30.
Belly Dance Choreography is also offered by Jennie Kaleta. This course will be held on Monday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., immediately following Introduction To Belly Dance in the elementary gymnasium. It will run for six weeks beginning Oct. 1 and the fee is $30.
New this year is Hula Hooping, also offered by Jennie Kaleta. Learn the basics of waist, hip and chest hooping. Hoops will be available to use during class, and also to buy. This course will be held on Tuesday for four weeks at 5 p.m. Classes will be held from Sept. 18-Oct. 9 in the Christ Chapel Wesleyan Church gymnasium. The fee is $20.
Back this fall is Men's Basketball led by Dave Wojda will be held on Tuesday, 8 to 10 p.m. p.m. from Sept. 18-Dec. 18. in the elementary gym and the fee is $2 per night and will be paid to the instructor.
Professional dancer and choreographer Helma Catalano will be teaching a 10-week Social and Ballroom Dancing class on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m., beginning Sept. 13. This class, for beginners and intermediate levels, will be held in the High School Lobby and the fee is $25 for singles and $45 for couples.
Rubber Stamp Card Making will be taught by Jody Enser. This course is offered on Wednesday in four separate classes: Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14, Dec. 5, each offering slightly different ideas. Classes meet in room 142 HS from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Class fee is $5 per class or $15 for all four. There is also a supply fee of $5 to be paid to the instructor during class time.
Basics of Oil Painting under the instruction of Barney Kuzara Jr., meets on Tuesday, Sept. 25 through Nov. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m., in Room 149 in the HS, at the cost of $40 plus supplies. (Supply list will be provided at the first class.)
Five-Hour Pre-licensing Class will be taught by Tom Herring on Sept. 15 from 8 to 1 p.m. in Room 217 HS. This is the minimal requirement necessary to schedule and take a road test: this five-hour course will provide the MV-285 certificate. Bring driver permit and food; a snack break will be provided. Class fee is $30.
A.A.R.P. Safe Driving course will be presented by Cathy Stopen on Oct. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This program offers participants a way to reduce driving record points due to violations and/or reduce insurance premiums. The class will meet in room HS Library and the fee is $17 for AARP members, $19 for non-members (Check made out to A.A.R.P.) There is no senior discount for this course. Bring a valid driver's license to class and bring a lunch if desired. Lunch break will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Researching Your Family History is being offered by Susan Dietzen in room 138 HS from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25-Oct. 23. Learn how to use the internet to search and find answers about your ancestors. Class fee is $25. There is also a supply fee of $5 to be paid to the instructor during class time.
Oppenheimer 403 (b) Seminar will be presented by Allen Dembski, financial advisor with Waddell and Reed, Sept. 19 from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in the HS Library. This class is free and helpful for teachers.
Will Your Savings Last as Long as You Do? will be presented on Sept. 26 or Oct. 2 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the HS Library by Dembski. The registration fee is $10.
Retirement Investment Strategies is also offered by Dembski. This class will be held in the HS Library on Oct. 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. Class fee is $10.
Putting America To Work For You! will be presented by Dembski on Oct. 17 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the HS Library. This is a discussion about municipal bonds and how they could work for you, offering significant benefits, including tax-free income. The registration fee is $10.
Knitting - Beginner and Intermediate will be taught by Candace Kuppel. The class will meet on Tuesday from 6 -7:30 p.m. and will run for eight weeks beginning Sept. 25. Supplies needed for: Beginner level: 1- 6 oz. skein 4 ply worsted yarn and 1 pair of short needles size 5 to 10, Intermediate level: pattern and supplies required for your pattern. Classes will meet in Room 145 HS and the registration fee is $40.
Crocheting - Beginner and Intermediate will also be taught by Kuppel on Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. It will run for eight weeks beginning Sept. 25. Supplies needed: 1- 4 oz. skein 4-ply worsted yarn, any color, 1 size H crochet hook and a pattern. Classes will meet in room 145 HS and the registration fee is $40.
The following four classes are offered by Sue Duecker. They will be held in the instructor's home at 7 Oak St., Silver Creek. The class fee is $20. There is also a supply fee of $25 which will be paid to the instructor the night of the class. Classes include - Lavender (make lavender salve and body lotion bars) on Sept. 19 or Nov. 14, 6 to 8 p.m.; Herbs 101 (covers benefits of herbs for cooking and craft making, includes projects and recipes) on Sept. 26, 6 to 8 p.m.; Soap Making on Oct. 3 or Nov. 7, 6 to 8 p.m.; and Candy Making, Oct. 17 or Oct. 24, 6 to 8 p.m.
Big Band Rehearsal is offered by Mike Wieloszynski on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. starting Jan. 21 in room 272 (the band room). Rehearse the music of Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Count Basie and more in a professional setting. Later dates will be determined during rehearsals. Free.
Bus tours by Destinations Plus: The bus tour offering for fall will be an Erie Canal Experience, on Oct. 8. Visit the First Presbyterian Church featuring Tiffany stained glass windows. Enjoy a hot buffet lunch at Canalside, then a two-hour Erie Canal Cruise and a visit to the Erie Canal Discovery Center. Leave Silver Creek School parking lot at 8:45 a.m., return at 5:45 p.m. See separate flyer and registration information on the website listed below. Deadline for registration is Sept. 28.
