Retrospective

The OBSERVER

Twenty years ago - 1992

Two white anchors removed from the mouth of the Canadaway Creek around 1900 have been donated by the family of Lewis Brochetti to the Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse and Veterans Park Museum in his name. The presentations were made by his widow, Felicia Cirrito Brochetti, of Las Vegas, formerly of Dunkirk; and her brother, Alfred Cirrito of Fredonia.

Thirty years ago - 1982

The present employment situation at the AL Tech Specialty Steel Corp. in Dunkirk is not at a pretty picture for the area's largest employer. In 1980, the specialty steel plant employed about 1,000 workers. Due to a plant shutdown this past week, only 40 employees were working at the plant. When operations resume, there will be a total rank and file enrollment of 796,325 of which are extended layoffs. Much of the blame for the bleak employment statistics can be tied to imports.

Forty years ago - 1972

The first annual Father and Son Golf Tournament was held at Hillview Golf Course, sponsored by Bea and Bill Porter. Winners were Bill and Bud Naslund. Al and Steve Poweski were second.

Fifty years ago - 1962

In today's OBSERVER is a "Do You Remember?" photo of the bridge spanning Canadaway Creek in Laona where Route 60 meets Webster Road. To the left is the old hotel in Laona which burned many years ago and to the right is the Powell home.
