Editor, OBSERVER:
While pondering the debate regarding the sale or subsidy of the County Home, it occurred to me the funding to maintain the status quo could come from elimination of the county executive and legislator positions.
That way, we could forgo the expense of elections every few years, and simply let the taxpayers decide which public employee labor unions they wish to run the show.
Perhaps a study of this concept could be commissioned.

in city 'shortsighted'

Shame on the people of Dunkirk. As a Dunkirk resident I include myself in that statement. Allowing Brooks Hospital to destroy another historic building, the church at 501 Central Ave. for another parking lot is shortsighted, ignorant and a foolish thing to do. I'm not originally from Dunkirk, but I've chosen to live here for over thirty years. I love the diversity of the people and its historically rich architectural beauty.
Over the years, in the name of progress, the people of Dunkirk have seen the architectural beauty of the city removed step by step. We now have, more parking, more empty store fronts, more prime vacant land. Is that progress? I remember reading in the OBSERVER a few months ago about a tree in Fredonia having to be removed because of blight. The reaction of the Fredonia community was sadness. Fredonia keeps everything that can stand. Here in Dunkirk we knock down historic treasures without a whimper of remorse.
My question to the planning board of Dunkirk is simple. Are the majority of hospital board members and those associated with the decision to demolish the church, residents of Dunkirk? If they are not, then the historic significants of the demolition of the church means nothing to them. If they are residents of Dunkirk; shame on them.
