After investigating the incident, it was determined that the victim, Frank T. Slate Jr., 73, was shot with what is believed to be a 16-gauge shotgun.

The defendants, Christopher M. Grant, 27, of 57 Kosciuszko Ave., and Theodore S. Wickham, 45, of 142 King St., both in Dunkirk, were reportedly visiting with Slate during the overnight hours of Sept. 14-15 when an argument began.

The situation reportedly deteriorated to the point that Wickham shot Slate one time.

Both defendants then fled the scene.

Both subjects were found at home by police officers. They are charged with second-degree manslaughter.

This murder is the first in Fredonia since Feb. 3, 2010 when Ruth Fisk was killed by Jason Wells at One Temple Square.
