Concord Spellbinders

At a recent meeting the Concord Spellbinders held their biannual speaking competitions.

President Mark Hess presided and acted as contest master. In the humor competition, Jutta Anne Rawcliffe's speech was titled "The Intruder." Then Jim Holton spoke on "The Healing Power of Humor." These speeches were evaluated by Jim Rawcliffe, Jutta Anne Rawcliffe and Grace Marie Sam.

The contest was followed by table topics. Hess acted as table topics master. He asked questions relating to 9/11. Five volunteers contributed impromptu speeches with Jim Rawcliffe being voted winner.

In the discussion after, Jim Rawcliffe reported attending the World Championship of Public Speaking held in Orlando, Fla., in August. The winners of the nine regions competed with Ryan Avery from Portland, Ore., being judged the best with the speech titled "Trust is a Must."

It was reported that the club would host the area speaking on Saturday to be held in room 105 Fenton Hall commencing at 9 a.m. Clubs from East Aurora, Orchard Park, Olean and Jamestown are eligible to compete. Concord Spellbinders are to be represented by Jutta Anne Rawcliffe (humor) and Jim Rawcliffe (evaluation). Guests are welcome. For more details, contact Jim Rawcliffe at 672-2662.

CIAO

CIAO members recently held "An Evening of Cards." Salvatore Crino and Iggy Parisi taught those present Scupa and Bristola. Using Italian cards, some from Sicily and some from Naples, members were engaged in friendly games. It was a night of fun and laughter. Refreshments were provided, but many were so engrossed with the games that they didn't even notice!

To kick off October as membership month, a tureen supper is being planned for Oct. 12, at 6 p.m. in St. Joseph Church Hall. Members and guests are asked to bring a dish to pass, place setting, and beverage other than coffee. Call Sam Crisanti at 934-2592 or Margaret Valone 679-4772 to place reservations.
