A free mini-health fair featuring blood pressure screenings and health information will be a highlight today at the First Annual Lake Erie Regional Health System 5K Run/Walk in Irving. The event, hosted by the TLC Health Foundation, is being planned to raise funds for a $2.4 million expansion of the Emergency Department at Lake Shore Health Care Center starting this fall. The project, when completed, will expand the department from its current size of just over 3,000 square feet to total some 7,000 square feet for improved patient services.
According to race organizers, the scenic trail run/walk begins at TLC Health Network's Administrative Office Building, 12644 Seneca Road, located behind the hospital. Check-in time and the mini-health fair start at 8 a.m., with a 9 a.m. start time for the run/walk. Individuals may continue to register throughout this week and on the day of the race. Since the early bird pre-registration date has passed, those who register now will receive their specially-designed event shirt following the race. Registration is $25 for adults, $5 for children and stroller riders are admitted free. A variety of prizes will be awarded following the race.
Those unable to run or walk at Saturday's event but interested in making a contribution to the Emergency Department renovation project can send their donation to the TLC Health Foundation, c/o Community Relations Department, Lake Shore Health Care Center, 845 Routes 5 & 20, Irving, NY 14081.
Participants are asked to be aware that the terrain in some spots during the race may be uneven and should not be considered handicapped accessible. For those using a stroller, a jogging stroller is recommended. Anyone attending is asked to park in the front hospital lot. Complimentary hot dogs and refreshments will be provided after the event.
