JAMESTOWN A stolen purse in the Southside Plaza has led to several charges for a Jamestown man.
Adam J. Kidd, 31, of Jamestown was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, second-degree reckless endangerment, obstruction of governmental administration, criminal mischief, multiple vehicle and traffic charges and third-degree robbery at 10:10 a.m. Thursday.
According to police, officers of the Jamestown Police Department were dispatched to the Southside Plaza for a report of a subject being observed smashing a window out of a vehicle that was in the parking lot. The driver fled the scene in a silver-colored SUV before police arrived, but a description of the vehicle and the suspect were broadcast to officers who spotted the car a short time late near Winsor Street.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to comply and hit an unmarked Jamestown Police Department unit. Kidd continued through several city streets on the south side before driving out of the city on Forest Avenue. Officers from the Lakewood-Busti Police Department and the New York State Police deployed stop sticks in Busti, which deflated one of Kidd's tires and stopped the vehicle on Busti-Sugar Grove Road. Kidd then led officers on a short foot chase where he was caught in a field and identified.
Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department said that although the pursuit only lasted for between five and 10 minutes, it covered a large area, taking officers through several side streets before the suspect left the city and his vehicle was stopped.
According to Sgt. Paul Gustafson of the Lakewood-Busti Police, they had received a report of a purse snatching shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
"The victim of the robbery was injured in the process, but through the process of several interviews, we were able to identify the suspect as Adam J. Kidd," Gustafson said. "We had been working on this since Saturday and known the identification of the suspect since this morning. Right now we're looking into a possible connection to similar cases that occurred earlier this summer at Wegman's and we've been working with Det. Knight from the Ellicott Police."
More charges are expected from Jamestown, Lakewood-Busti and the Town of Ellicott Police for other charges unrelated to this incident. Kidd is being held in the city jail awaiting arraignment.
