Girl Scout cookies on sale in?Chautauqua County

October 9, 2012
The OBSERVER

It is that time of year again - Girl Scout cookie time.

Girl Scouts across Western New York have been busy getting ready for the Girl Scout cookie sale. Junior Girl Scout Troop 20158, made up of Girl Scouts from Dunkirk and Fredonia, are among the participating troops currently selling cookies.

The Girl Scouts have eight cookies to choose from. Returning favorites include Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Sandwiches (a.k.a. Savannahs), Shortbread, Peanut Butter Patties (a.k.a. Tagalongs), Caramel Delites, Lemonades, Thanks-A-lots and new cookie Mango Cremes. The Mango Creme cookie is a vanilla and coconut wafer cookie filled with a tangy mango-flavored creme enhanced with nutrients derived from fruits. All cookies are still $3.50 per box.

The cookie sale teaches the girls many life skills including goal setting, organizational and leadership skills, money management, marketing, networking, communication and public speaking.

Girl Scout Troop 20158 will also be participating in the "Cookies on a Mission Program." This is a partnership between The Girl Scouts of Western New York and the Niagara Falls Air Force Base to provide Girl Scout cookies to the men and women in the Armed Forces overseas and right here in Western New York. There are two ways that the public can participate in this program.

During the door to door sale, which runs until Oct. 27, the girls will ask community members if they would like to donate Girl Scout cookies to the Armed Forces. If interested, simply mark how many in the donate cookies box when placing the order and pay the Girl Scout for these cookies. When the cookies are delivered, the council will forward the donated cookies to the Niagara Falls Air Force Base and they will be distributed overseas, to local Veteran's Hospitals and military bases. People can also participate when purchasing cookies at booth sales - just purchase additional cookies for the military and place them in the donation boxes.

The girls want to make sure that everyone that wants Girl Scout cookies gets a chance to purchase them. They will be selling cookies door to door, e-mailing friends and family, announcing cookie booth sales in the paper, radio and on Facebook.

Anyone can also order cookies by contacting Troop Cookie Manager Donna Banach at 785-6180 for Dunkirk and Fredonia deliveries. Michele Smith, product sales manager for the Girl Scouts of Western New York, may also be contacted at 1-888-837-6410 to put any interested parties in touch with other troop cookie managers across the county and surrounding areas.
