Book Sale to benefit Literacy Volunteers
On Saturday, 21 East Bookstore will hold a used book sale to help benefit its Literacy Volunteers program. The sale will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with paperbacks sold for .50 and hardbacks $1. Customers can enter the building via Washington Avenue.
Dunkirk Chamber meets today
The Dunkirk Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly board of directors meeting today at 4 p.m. at Jamestown Community Col-lege North Campus on Route 60. Members and non-members are invited to attend.

Foundations in Agriculture ESL
classes to be offered
Foundations in Agricul-ture English as a Second Language classes will be offered at the Central Avenue Community Learn-ing Center in Dunkirk.
The program, funded in part by the Appalachian Re-gion Commission, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Erie 2 Chautauqua-Catta-raugus BOCES, is available to area residents whose native language is Spanish.
The program will run from Oct. 15 thru Jan. 31, on Mondays and Tuesdays. Monday's class will be from 12:30-4 p.m., while Tues-day's class will run from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Students will learn farm-related vocabulary, English-language development, and agricultural processes. Attendance for all classes will be mandatory.
There will also be a spring session, which will include on-site farm safety classes, as well as on-site equipment operation classes. Some fees may apply to the spring session.

Forestville calls for special meeting early this morning again
Forestville has once again called for a special emergency meeting today, Oct. 10, at 9 a.m. The purpose of the meeting is to award the engineer recommended contractors bid for the water project. The 9 a.m. meeting will take place at the Municipal Building. Poss-ible personnel changes will also be discussed.
A previous meeting was called at this same time and location, but was canceled by village officials Monday afternoon. The new meeting was announced Tuesday in an e-mail sent to the OBSERVER at noon.
Certified food handler class set for Monday
The Chautauqua County Health Department will offer the Certified Food Handler class Monday at the War Vets Club, 3431 Fluvanna Ave., Jamestown. Check-in is 12:30 p.m. and training from 1 to 4 p.m. Call 753-4693 to preregister. There is a fee to attend. Book and course material will be provided. There is a $35 fee for profits, a $20 fee for not for profits.
College & Career Night
Jamestown Community College and the Chautauqua County Counselors Associa-tion will host the 36th annual College & Career Night Oct. 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex on JCC's James-town Campus.
The program offers high school students, their parents, and community members the chance to gather information about educational institutions and career possibilities. Representatives from nearly 60 colleges and 80 career areas are expected to attend the event.
