Demolition of the former First Christian Church, last owned by Iglesia Getsemani and purchased by Brooks Memorial Hospital, is now proceeding.

According to Alan Zurowski, building inspector for the city of Dunkirk, Brooks received a permit on Monday. Asbestos has already been abated.

"Taking it down is the easy part; removing the debris is harder," he said.

Demolition of the former First Christian Church at 501 Central Ave. is progressing.

Scott Butler, vice president for marketing and community relations for the hospital, said that safety fencing has been installed.

"Depending on weather, most of the heavy work should be done on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week," he said.

During the demolition, there will be a loss of about 20 parking spaces, but the community should not notice any difference.

The management team is parking elsewhere at this time.

A meeting of the Dunkirk Zoning Board of Appeals will be held on Tuesday Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall to deal with permission to install a parking lot on the site. After this step, the request will have to go before the city's Planning Board which is scheduled to meet on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.
