Frewsburg boys,?Sherman girls take 1st

SILVER CREEK - The Frewsburg Bears boys' cross country team and Sherman girls' team came away with first-place finishes Monday in high school cross country action.

The Bears took first with 39 points, slightly ahead of Gowanda's 40. Silver Creek took third at 73 and Sherman took last at 79.

The boys race was action packed as the top 10 runners finished within 45 seconds and places five through 12 finished within 10 seconds.

Sherman's Ryan Carpenter placed first as he finished the 2.7-mile course with a time of 16:10 while Gowanda's Matt Kruszka took second place at 16:18. Silver Creek's Adam Tanner placed fifth at 16:46 while Gowanda's Johnny Shaw and Joe Kruszka took the next two spots with times of 16:46 and 16:48, respectively.

Other top finishers for Silver Creek included Tyler Staklasa (11th, 16:55), Jake Mullen (16th, 17:43), James Feldmann (21st, 18:16), James MacDaneld (22nd, 18:17) and Jack McAlevey (27th, 18:57).

In the girls' race, Sherman won with 34 points followed by Silver Creek 45, Gowanda 55 and Frewsburg 85.

Sherman's Holley Eliason took first with a time of 18:02. Silver Creek's Hannah Seiders edged out her sister Emma for third place with a time of 18:49. Emma Seiders' time was 18:58 to take fourth place. Gowanda's Colleen Steward (19:11), Hunter Samuelson (19:13) and Sarah Grubbs (19:26) took places sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. Silver Creek's Rachel Radack placed ninth at 19:31.

Also for Silver Creek, Sarah Adams took 13th at 20:41 and Claire Castiglia took 16th at 21:08.

"Emma Seiders made a big jump to where she finished today," Silver Creek coach Mike Janisch said. "She took 20 seconds off her time."

Silver Creek and the rest of Chautauqua County competes Friday at the County Championships at Long Point State Park.
