Silver Creek gets first playoff win in school history

BUFFALO - The No. 13 Silver Creek Black Knights made some school history Tuesday as they won their first ever Section 6 Class C girls' high school soccer playoff game with a 9-0 rout of No. 4 Leonardo DaVinci High School in quarterfinals action.

The Black Knights have been in existence for five years now and in the past four years, the team has won a combined four games. That has changed this season as Silver Creek won three games in the regular season and now a Sectional playoff game.

"It means everything," Silver Creek coach Kevin Rice said. "The difference is we only had a few blowouts early in the season. We still have a ways to go before we can play with Maple Grove and Salamanca on a consistent basis. We're coming around and this win means everything. Wining a sectional game, and the way we did, it's a huge boost going forward."

It was a pair of freshmen who led the way for the Black Knights as Janelle Cossin led the way with three goals and two assists while classmate Katie Dittiger netted two goals.

"They may be freshmen by grade, but they are playing well ahead of their years," Rice said. "They had a strong season. They started out like freshmen, but gained confidence and improved. My whole team, we only won three games, but we were in a lot of them. We have come a long way from last year. We are a better team now. This is a great win. I only graduate two seniors, so this is a huge boost heading into next year."

Jayde Lewis also had three goals and two assists while Mary Bonasera tallied a goal. Marisa Carline had two helpers for the Black Knights.

Jamie Heir was the winning goalie with two saves.
