Angel Alverio and his family, of 328 Swan St., have been named Rising Star winners for September. Grossman's Bargain Outlet Manager Ralph Smith presented a $100 gift card to the Alverios for their home improvement efforts.
The Alverios home make-over included the installation of a deep-red vinyl siding and white trim, which replaced the existing asphalt-shingle siding. Future improvements include the installation of replacement windows.
The Rising Star program was created to promote and recognize city of Dunkirk property owners who make significant exterior improvements to existing residential homes, which in turn helps to elevate the image of city neighborhoods.

Each month through October, a $100 gift certificate will be presented to the winning property owner. Program guidelines and nomination forms are available from the City Clerk's office and the following Rising Star sponsors: Add Lumber, Bargain Outlet, Service Hardware and the Home Depot. All exterior home improvements will be considered and residents are encouraged to apply.
