Special to the OBSERVER

The scheduled men's ice hockey game between Fredonia State and Penn State has been postponed due to the threat of Hurricane Sandy in the northeast.

The game has been rescheduled for Tues., Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. in Fredonia.

The Blue Devils were scheduled to play host to the Nittany Lions at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Steele Hall Ice Arena. Yet after talks between the two coaches, the schools mutually agreed to postpone the game as the storm - nicknamed "Frankenstorm" by some media outlets - started moving westward this morning as predicted.

Women's Soccer

The State University of New York Athletic Conference has postponed two women's soccer tournament games scheduled for Wednesday and moved them to a single neutral site this Friday.

The arrival of Hurricane Sandy across the state prompted the conference to postpone the two semifinal on-campus games - No. 3 seed Fredonia State at No. 2 seed Oneonta, and No. 4 seed Cortland at No. 1 seed Brockport - and moved both of them to the turf field Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester.

In an e-mail announcing the change, SUNYAC Commissioner Azure Davey said the change was made for both safety and competitive reasons. "It takes Wednesday out of the mix," Davey wrote, "and ensures we don't have teams dealing with travel in high winds and/or getting out of town when power lines, etc., are down.

"Further, it ensures that we have a playing surface that can withstand the weather and our teams can get on for the games."

The new game times are 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday - the Blue Devils facing Oneonta in the 1:30 game. The Friday winners will meet for the SUNYAC title 1 p.m. Saturday, also at Roberts Wesleyan.

The SUNYAC champion earns a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament as an automatic qualifier.
