Twenty years ago - 1992
Strong winds with gusts up to 69 mph at the Chautauqua Airport/Dunkirk were responsible for much damage in the lakeshore area recently. One of the hardest hit was the new Kmart project on Vineyard Drive. The north wall blew in and the south wall caved in later in the day. A silo on the Howard H. Ferry farm on Route 60 in the town of Pomfret also was toppled by strong winds.
Thirty years ago - 1982
A 100-year-old dream became a concrete reality recently as 8,000 to 10,000 people gathered on a crisp, sunny October afternoon to see the Chautauqua Lake-Route 17 Expressway bridge dedicated. Gov. Hugh Carey led a host of state and local dignitaries in celebrating the completion of the often-controversial $53 million span.
Forty years ago - 1972
Retired dentists honored at the recent meeting of the Northern Chautauqua Dental Study Club were Dr. Clair U. Walker of Fredonia, Dr. Harry B. Lyon, who is 99 years old, and Dr. Eugene A. Foley, both of Dunkirk.
Fifty years ago - 1962
Ronald L. Penharlow of Westfield has left for Honolulu where he is employed by the board of education as an industrial arts teacher in the Area Intermediate School.
