The Fredonia Shakespeare Club held its fifth regular meeting of the 2012-2013 year at the home of Mrs. William Larson. The topic for the year is "Authors as Social Commentators."
Members heard a paper by Florence McClelland on Christopher Hitchens which she summarizes as follows:
Christopher Hitchens, whose wit and wisdom charmed millions through his monthly columns in Vanity Fair, was a widely respected author and lecturer. When he was suddenly stricken with an aggressive form of cancer at the very peak of his success he began a journal recording his feelings about dying and other people's reaction to his situation. After his death in 2011 these were published as a book, "Mortality" which has struck a chord with readers not used to the subject addressed in print.
Larson was assisted at the tea table by Mrs. Victor Jonus.
The Fredonia Shakespeare Club will hold its next meeting on Thursday at the Dunkirk Historical Museum hosted by Priscilla Bernatz.
