Fredonia State women's basketball rolled to a 70-52 victory over Nazareth in the 2012-13 season opener at Steele Hall.
Junior guard Becky Hebert led the offense with 22 points, junior forward Jaimie Warren had 11 points and seven rebounds, and senior guard Jenna Austin added 10 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
Senior guard Erica Shaw led Nazareth with 12 points.
The Blue Devils used stifling defense to trigger their fast break and raced out to a 30-12 lead in the first half. Seven players scored during the stretch, which included a 22-2 run.
Nazareth regrouped with a 9-0 run of its own to trail 30-21. The Golden Flyers continued to close the gap and trailed by seven before Hebert drilled a three-point basket. The Blue Devils led 35-26 at halftime.
Fredonia State also outscored Nazareth 35-26 in the second half.
The Blue Devils are back in action 8 p.m. Saturday vs. Washington & Jefferson in the first round of the Penn State Behrend Tip-Off Tournament.
Men's Basketball
Devils fall in season opener
HAMBURG - The Fredonia State men's basketball team fell, 83-59, at Hilbert College in the season opener on Thursday.
Junior Tyrone Clark led the Devils with 17 points on eight of 10 shooting from the field. He added five rebounds and four steals. Senior Amir Billups added 11 points and five rebounds.
Hilbert was paced by Dan McFarland with 26 points. Hilbert held a 31-29 edge in rebounds and shot 60.4 percent from the field, compared to 44 percent for the Devils.
Tied 4-all in the early going, Hilbert rattled off nine straight points to take a 15-4 lead it would not surrender. Hilbert led 42-30 at the break.
The Devils take on St. John Fisher Friday at Hilbert College with a 7 p.m. tipoff.
