Higgins helps UB to unveil school of dental medicine’s “S-miles To Go” mobile dental van

November 19, 2012
The OBSERVER

Congressman Brian Hig-gins joined University at Buffalo's School of Dental Medicine to unveil "S-miles To Go," its new state-of-the-art mobile dental van.

"I was pleased to be on hand to help unveil University at Buffalo's new-and-improved "S-miles To Go" van," said Congressman Higgins. "The School of Dental Medicine is providing such a critical service by making sure that children in our community are receiving good dental care and this new van gives them the best possible tools and resources to do this."

The "S-miles to Go" van is the newest unit in University at Buffalo's mobile dental program, which serves the needs of elementary school children in Chautauqua County. The county has been designated a Dental Health Professional Shortage Area, meaning that there are only a small number of dentists who serve the Medicaid-eligible population. University at Buffalo's mobile dental program serves 24 schools and sees an average of 3,100 patients each year.

The 42 foot-long, 3-dental chair mobile clinic features a wheelchair lift, a panoramic X-ray unit, digital radiography, an intake/education area and electronic patient records.

The new mobile dental van was funded by a grant from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration, and contributions from two Jamestown-based foundations: the Ralph C. Sheldon Foundation and the Lenna Foundation.
