Enjoy holiday, shopping can wait

November 22, 2012
The OBSERVER

Editor, OBSERVER:

Not long ago, I was hanging around with a group of friends when the topic of "favorite holiday" came up.

I knew that my answer to this question was going to be seen as strange to my friends, but was pleasantly surprised to hear that we all had the same answer. Thanksgiving.

The one holiday where there wasn't any pressure to buy, buy, buy. You go to a relative's house and enjoy the company of each other with some good food and conversation. It is a great time to simply reflect on what we are thankful for.

I saw a posting on a website that said some stores are starting Black Friday on Thanksgiving Day. My first thought was "What a horrible thing to do!" On the holiday that celebrates family and what we are thankful for, we will have people pushing and shoving and yelling at each other for the purpose of getting that cheap deal on a gift for Christmas.

What an absolute shame that our society has come to this.

Please take the time to be with your family and to be thankful for what you have. Black Friday can wait.

HEATH FORSTER,

Fredonia
