Twenty years ago - 1992
A plan to convert Gowanda Psychiatric Center into a 1,300 inmate medium-security prison has been released. The proposal reportedly includes $3.8 million for fence and razor wire to expand prison grounds on the former GPC campus. About 700 positions will be created by expansion of the Collins Correctional Facility. The proposed conversion would bring about a much needed boost to the economy of the area following closure of GPC in October 1991 and the relocation of many employees to Buffalo and West Seneca.
Thirty years ago - 1982
Mr. and Mrs. John Buczek, owners of the Bark Grill in Westfield, and their chef, John Pereria, recently traveled to Pittsburgh for an appearance on WTAE-TV's "A.M. Pittsburgh." According to Mrs. Buczek, "It's similar to "A.M. Buffalo" and there is talk they may send a tape to the Buffalo station. The restaurant was chosen for "featuring" by a group of Pittsburgh residents who vacation in the Dunkirk-Fredonia area.

Lu Ann Noel, a senior at the BOCES Philip J. LoGuidice Occupational Center in Fredonia, is the Student of the Week. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Noel, Lake Road, Brocton and a senior at Brocton Central School.
Fifty years ago - 1962
Dr. Arch H. Nicholson, who rebuilt the 150-year-old residence on East Main Street in Ripley, has sold the house and moved back to the Olean area. New owners of the historic home are Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Norton of Fairhaven, N.J. Mr. Norton is former YMCA director in Westfield.
