Twenty years ago - 1992

Merchants from the village of Fredonia got a first-hand look at how a Wal-Mart store will operate and what effect it will have on the community. A group of five Fredonia business owners traveled to the Wal-Mart store in Meadville, Pa., toured the facility and met with representatives of the Meadville Chamber of Commerce during the daylong event. The tour was set up by the Northern Chautauqua Chamber of Commerce.

Thirty years ago - 1982

Technical Sgt. Robert J. Fijal, son of Edward F. Fijal of Dunkirk and Mrs. Josephine Weber of Fredonia has been decorated with the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Mich. The medal is awarded to those individuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement or meritorious service in the performance of their duties on behalf of the Air Force. Technical Sgt. Fijal, an aircraft environmental systems technician with the 379th Field Maintenance Squadron, is a 1973 graduate of Dunkirk High School.

Forty years ago - 1972

Hyman Lippman has decided to close his store, Gail Jewelers, located at 337 Central Ave., Dunkirk. He opened the store July 18, 1938.

Fifty years ago - 1962

Officers of the senior class at Fredonia Central School are Joseph Calarco, president; Robert Mourer, vice president; Gwenn Narraway, secretary; and JoAnn Catania, treasurer.
