Big second quarter leads T’birds past Eagles

RIPLEY - Chautauqua Lake exploded for 22 points and held Ripley two just two points in the second quarter as the Thunderbirds downed the Eagles, 62-38, Thursday in non-league boys high school basketball.

Already holding a commanding 21-7 first-quarter lead, the Thunderbirds pushed the cushion to 43-9 at halftime.

Ian Clute led the scoring attack for Chautauqua Lake with 19 points while A.J. Hulton had 17 points. Kyle Mayer added 11 for the winners.

The Eagles fared much better in the second half as they outscored the visitors, 29-19. Ripley coach Adam Chambers played some of his younger players in the second half and they did not let him down. Eighth grader Aaron Swan drained three treys to highlight the Eagles' second half. Kyle Hammond led Riply in scoring with 12. Meanwhile, Vinny Shioleno had four points, four rebounds and five steals in defeat.
