The OBSERVER

The first recipient of an award established in honor of former OBSERVER reporter and Dunkirk resident Philip McGan has been announced. James D. Heil, 25, of Houston, Texas was recently named in a national magazine as the winner of the first annual Philip McGan Silver Antenna Award for excellence in amateur radio public relations. He was one of seven nominees for the award which was established in Mr. McGan's memory.

Thirty years ago 1982

Formerly located at 314 Central Ave., Dunkirk, Central TV and Repair has moved to 404 Central Ave., Dunkirk. Dick and Mary Ann Brochetti, who have been in business for themselves for the past 11 years, are the store owners and Mrs. Brochetti is the store manager. The Brochettis opened the store at the former location in 1979 and moved two weeks ago to enlarge the showroom and stock. Both are lifelong residents of Dunkirk.

Forty years ago - 1972

Trophies have been awarded to two local chess champions crowned recently at the YMCA. Bob Moore was named the 1972 Fredonia-Dunkirk junior chess champion and Dr. Maurice Neveu, the 1973 Fredonia-Dunkirk chess champion.

Fifty years ago - 1962

Brooks Hospital Administrator L. William Coon was presented with a check for $400 from members of the Fredonia Kiwanis Club, the first installment of a $1,200 pledge made to the hospital by the group.
