Thirty-six members attended the recent meeting of the Lake Erie Bird Club conducted by John Ruska. Members shared recent bird sightings that included Chipping Sparrow, Evening Grosbeak and Wild Turkeys. Ruska discussed cavity-nesting birds in the area, such as Eastern Bluebird, Black-capped Chickadee, House Wren, American Kestrel, Tree Swallow and others. He encouraged members to think of a cavity-nesting bird they could attract to their property and how they might do that. He will discuss more about cavity-nesting birds at the December meeting.
Marilyn Pecoraro-O'Connell of Silver Creek and owner of the Wild Birds Unlimited Store in Blasdell presented the program on winter bird feeding and what birds are in the area during the winter. She discussed the many types of feeders now available and also the best seeds to feed the birds. Black-oil sunflower seed is the one seed that will feed the largest variety of birds. Water is also very important for birds at all times.
Refreshments for the meeting were provided by Jane McMaster, Carol Hardenburg and Mary Shearman.
The club will meet on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at BOCES, Fredonia-Stockton Road, Fredonia. The meeting will be a holiday raffle and members are asked to bring an inexpensive ($5 or less) wrapped gift. All who are interested in birds are welcome to attend. For more information about the club, call 673-1627.
