MAYVILLE - As snow begins to fall this weekend, the county is prepared to keep the roads safe.

County plows are ready for the upcoming season.
George Spanos, Chautauqua County Director of Public Facilities, has released his snow removal and ice control plan for the county.
"Snow is a fact of life in Chautauqua County, so we must be prepared for winter," Spanos said. "The county's snow removal and ice control plan is designed to improve safety for motorists, ensure emergency responders reach their destination and enhance movement for motorists and economic activities."
To prepare for winter, the Chautauqua County Division of Transportation moves to three shifts, to ensure 24-hour coverage as the snow flies. The first shift runs from 3 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. The second shift begins at 11 a.m. and continues through 7:30 p.m. And, the final shift runs from 7 p.m. through 3:30 a.m.
"There is a half-hour overlap so they can discuss if there are any issues," Spanos said.
Throughout the summer and warmer months, crews work to order salt and brine, both of which are purchased locally. Additionally, all of the equipment for snowplowing is prepared, including the trucks, plows and salt-spreaders.
According to Spanos, amber flashing lights will generally be the first indication to the presence of snow-removal equipment.
"We urge residents, as good neighbors and motorists themselves, not to add to the hazards of wintertime driving," he said. "When encountering snowplow equipment people should reduce their speed, keep a safe distance, or pass with care. It is the responsibility of each one of us to assist our plow operators to safely accomplish their task."
