Twenty years ago - 1992

Christmas in the Park was held on a recent Saturday afternoon in the Silver Creek Bandstand. Winners from a contest in the elementary schools rode around town with Santa Claus in a Victorian buggy. They included Sam Crino, Liz McCroskey and Dan Gallivan. The event was sponsored by the Silver Creek Bandstand Society, headed by Sgt. Louis Pelletter.

Thirty years ago - 1982

The first inmates at the new Collins Correctional Facility arrived Dec. 22. The medium-security prison eventually will house 250 prisoners. Forty-four inmates spent their first night at the Collins facility. A van brought in six prisoners from the Auburn and Elmira facilities while a bus transported 38 prisoners from Greater Meadow (Comstock), Attica and McGregor (Wilton).

Forty years ago - 1972

Harry S. Truman, 33rd president of the United States, died today in Kansas City at the age of 88.

Fifty years ago - 1962

State Supreme Court Justice Rollin A. Fancher presided for the last time today in Dunkirk as Chautauqua County Surrogate. He will become a Supreme Court Justice Jan. 1, 1963.
