County offering registration Saturdays

MAYVILLE - If the snow keeps falling, expect the snowmobile trails to be open soon.

The state recently contacted the Chautauqua County clerk's office via email and telephone, stating local DMVs were no longer allowed to have informational material regarding snowmobile clubs or handle Snowmobile Association registration.

"The state is not allowing our DMV staff to handle snowmobile association information or applications. We have found a way, however, to still accommodate our snowmobilers who would like to register their snowmobiles and become a member of one of the clubs so they can still get their discounted registration rate," said Chautauqua County Clerk Sandy Sopak.

Snowmobile clubs are working on the trails, but they’re not ready just yet.

"By having a member of the snowmobile clubs on site every Saturday to accept the applications and provide the vouchers, snowmobilers can handle all their registration needs in one stop."

When a snowmobile is registered at a Chautauqua County DMV office, the county receives 12.7 percent of the transaction, if the registration is handled in the DMV office; that is, $5.72 if they pay the $45 fee and $12.70 if the snowmobiler does not join a club and pays the $100 fee.

The state then retains $4.28 for a $45 registration and takes a loss on the $100 registration.

Updates and Saturday hours, which will be dependent on snowfall, will be listed on the County Clerk's website weekly at www.co.chautauqua.ny.us/departments/clerk.
