South Dayton man dies in logging accident

VILLENOVA - A South Dayton man died Thursday afternoon as a result of a logging accident.

Harvey J. Detweiler, 36, of 8796 Cottage Road, South Dayton, was cutting large pine trees at a Route 83 location in Cherry Creek when a partially rotten tree fell from behind him for an unknown reason. The tree struck the victim, causing fatal injuries. Chautauqua County Coroner John Sixbey pronounced Detweiler dead at the scene.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department was assisted at the scene by New York State Police, the Cherry Creek and Forestville volunteer fire departments and Alstar Ambulance.
