Norbert B. Lanski

Norbert B. "Norbie" Lanski, 89, of Dunkirk, died Thursday evening, December 27, 2012, at HPMC in Erie following a brief illness.

Born August 2, 1923, in Dunkirk, son of the late Bernard and Bernice (Zmudzinski) Lanski.

A veteran of WW II, Norbie served as Seaman 1st Class with the U.S. Navy in many places, including Italy, Tunisia and Algeria, and received the WWII Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal and the European Theatre Medal with 2 Stars.

A retired crane operator at the former Roblin Steel in Dunkirk, he was a past employee of the former ALCO and Star Wine.

Norbie enjoyed a well tended garden - his specialty was his homegrown tomatoes, and his morning routine of going to Matt's News to pick up the morning paper and scratch-off Lotto tickets.

His memberships included BMA Parish Church of St. Hedwig, WWII Vets Club, VFW Post 1017, Dunkirk Falcon Club, 50-year member at Murray Hose Co. #4, and past member of the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council, where he served at many past veterans' funerals as Chaplain.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Bernice (Szymanski) Lanski, whom he married June 30, 1951; their children, Josephine (Patrick) Clucas of Goose Creek, SC, Bernice (Gary) Sedlmayer, Frederick (Deborah) Lanski and Audrey (Donald) Stoyle, all of Dunkirk; 3 grandsons, Ryan and Michael Clucas of Goose Creek, SC, and Joseph Majkut Jr. of Dunkirk; great-granddaughter Celia Majkut, along with several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by sisters Victoria Siragusa and Loretta Lanski; and brother Casimer Lanski.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 East Doughty Street in Dunkirk on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Mon-day at 10 o'clock in Blessed Mary Angela Parish Church of St. Hedwig. Interment will be in St. Hedwig's Cemetery.
