TOWN OF DUNKIRK: Renovations are ‘awful’ idea

December 30, 2012
The OBSERVER

Surprise! The town of Dunkirk renovations for their town hall came in over budget.

What is not so surprising is the town's attitude toward going forward with the renovations despite the fact the funds it has saved for it could be better spent elsewhere. "The biggest thing is when we met with Sandberg and Kessler we gave them a figure not to exceed that amount and they went way over which really wasn't what we needed to hear," said town Supervisor Richard Purol earlier this month. "So they said they would come up with some other ideas but this is not really doing an awful lot for me."

Of course, officials could look at renting a site - possibly even outside town limits. But, some board members say, that is not legal.

Right. Just as illegal as the village of Fredonia having its water facilities in the town of Dunkirk and town of Pomfret and the village of Silver Creek having its Department of Public Works facility in the town of Hanover.

So what if local officials are not consistent when it comes to the law? Nobody enforces their laws, especially on illegal executive sessions.

Unfortunately, this renovation plan looks like something to keep a governmental entity alive that probably does not need to be.
