Twenty years ago - 1992

Although the official deal is not complete, one of England's top 100 holding companies has taken over the daily operations of the Red Wing Co., Fredonia's largest industry and one of the largest food processors in the United States. Tomkins Public Limited Company Inc., of London, England was the higher of two bidders in the friendly takeover of former owner Ranks Hovis McDougall PLC. Red Wing was purchased by RHD in 1977 and has grown to employ about 600 at its Fredonia factory.

Thirty years ago - 1982

At the age of 17, Fredonia native Brenda M. Day is working with dedication toward her goal of participating in the 1984, '88 and '92 Olympic games. An avid cyclist, Brenda was accepted at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., in February of 1981. In January, she was named to the Olympic Development Team.

Forty years ago - 1972

New heads of the Dunkirk City Fire Department who will be taking office are John Palmer, chief; Ronald Kaus, first assistant; and Robert Tworek, second assistant.

Fifty years ago - 1962

Chautauqua County Surrogate Rollin A. Fancher, who will officially become a justice of the Supreme Court of the Eighth Judicial District at the stroke of midnight tonight, was sworn in yesterday in Jamestown.
