Maybe at your work place's break room or the local bar or restaurant you like to frequent, you'll hear all the solutions for the world's problems. "What Congress needs to do is ..." "What the County Legislature needs to do is ..." "What the mayor needs to do is ...". Well, let's talk about what you can do to improve things.
Work hard. If you're employed, be a valuable person in your company. In fact, work harder than those around you. If we all took this approach, we would have the best workforce in the country.
Volunteer. If we want our communities to improve, if we want our streets cleaned of litter, if we want to see young people make good choices in the future, we can do this simply by providing our time.
Show compassion. Maybe you have a different viewpoint than another person. That's OK. That's what makes America great. But when people share an opinion that you disagree with, don't sit back and hurl insults. That's not going to change their views; if anything it will only cause them to dig in deeper.
If we did only these three things in 2013, we would be a better community and nation. And we don't need the government to do it for us.
