The annual scholarship created to memorialize Mary Lou Messina was recently awarded to Linda Gregory, of WCA Hospital. Ms. Gregory is a labor and delivery nurse who is attending the University at Buffalo to complete a RN-BS nursing degree. She anticipates the degree will help her enhance her patient care, increase her team work efforts and present new insights on how to be a better nurse.
The scholarship award is given to an employee of the Hospital who is pursuing continuing education in the specific field of nursing. When setting up the Mary Lou Messina Scholarship Fund at the WCA Foundation, Phil Messina set the criteria for the scholarship to emulate his late wife's traits.
Mary Lou Messina was a registered nurse from 1979 to 2004 at WCA Hospital. She worked in the Special Care Unit, Recovery Room, Pain Management and Ambulatory Surgery Center during her tenure there. Her love for nursing was only outweighed by her love for her family and friends.
Paul Fardink, secretary of the WCA Hospital Board of Directors, left, presents the Mary Lou Messina Scholarship award to Linda Gregory with Phil Messina.
Messina was dedicated to the nursing profession and demonstrated that when serving her patients through her compassionate and caring heart and hands.
