Sunday benefit for Alia Makuch
On Sunday at 3 p.m,. a concert will be held to benefit the Sandra and Aili Makuch family. Aili has been battling cancer since last May. The concert will be held at the Westfield Academy and Central School auditorium. There is no admission for the concert, however a good will offering will be taken at the door.
The concert will feature a wide variety of styles of music and is suitable for the entire family. Performers will include Westfield High School Jazz Ensemble, Wind of the Spirit choir from Westfield United Methodist Church, the New Horizons Schleptet brass ensemble, as well as WACS and SUNY Fredonia music faculty and local musicians from around the area. The program will include jazz, classical, show tunes, traditional folk music.
All proceeds will go to the Makuch family to help offset the costs of Aili's treatments.
In addition, on the same day, the Westfield Teachers Association is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner, serving from 4-6 p.m. Tickets are available from any Westfield Teachers Association member for $6. Take out is available, but purchasing tickets in advance is encouraged.
Cancellation of Village Board meeting
The Cassadaga Village Board meeting scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the village offices has been rescheduled for next Wednesday (Jan. 23) at 7 p.m. at the village offices.
The meeting of the Dunkirk Common Council Public Works Committee scheduled for today has been rescheduled to Jan. 22 at 10 a.m. in City Hall.
St. John's Church
to hold pork and
St. John's United Church of Christ on Central Avenue in Dunkirk is sponsoring a pork and sauerkraut dinner on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. Tickets are $7.50 presale and $8 at the door. Call the church office for ticket reservations at 366-0710.
Girl Scouts to hold cakeoff on Sunday
The Brocton, Dunkirk, Fredonia and Cassadaga Girl Scouts will hold a cakeoff at the Dunkirk Moose Lodge on Lake Shore Drive West on Sunday. The event will begin at 2 p.m. with each scout decorating a cake with their favorite adult helper.
The cakes will be judged and available for sale to the highest donation offered. All registered Girl Scouts in the area are invited to attend, as well as the general public. There will be cakes available from local bakeries along with refreshments. If you would like more information, call Lori Felt at 366-6132.
Loud boom source found
The source of a loud boom heard in the south county Sunday evening has been found.
The Lakewood-Busti Po-lice Department said Sgt. Inv. Paul Gustafson interviewed a 20-year-old male Monday and learned the individual caused the boom. According to the report, the individual stated he mixed three 6-pound boxes of Tannerite together and shot the product with a 30.06 rifle in a ravine on the Lawson Road in the town of Busti, causing a large explosion.
No charges are being filed at this time.
Directors of Soil and Water Conservation District to meet
The Board of Directors of te Chautauqua County Soil and Water Conservation District will hold their regular meeting on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. The board will meet at the district office at 3542 Turner Road in Jamestown.
Blessed Mary Angela Parish to hold Chicken BBQ Dinner Wednesday
The Blessed Mary Angela Parish Holy Name Society will hold a chicken BBQ dinner Jan. 16 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. or until dinners are sold out at the parish social center, 324 Townsend St. Dunkirk. The menu will include chicken by Mike Porpiglia, tossed salad, rolls with butter, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, dessert, and coffee and iced tea. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for children. They are available after Masses at Church of St Hyacinth, Church of St. Hedwig, at Big Rick's One Stop on Lake Shore Drive and the parish office at 324 Townsend St. Diners may eat in or get takeout. There are a limited number of tickets available at the door. To reserve tickets for pick-up at the door, community members should call 366-2307.
Gas prices fall
Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 1.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.66/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 0.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.26/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 11.1 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 3.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.
