SILVER CREEK - Last Sunday was a day for dealing with wind damage in the county. Silver Creek was especially hard hit. As Silver Creek fire chief Jeff Griewisch had said on Sunday night, the department was "darn busy." The firefighters started at 3:45 a.m. Sunday morning with a call of tree down in back of Tops which brought wires down, trapped a motorist, and eventually caused a fire. There were also a number of trees down in the village and one in the Town of Hanover.
Members of the Silver Creek Village Board took time at their meeting on Tuesday to thank the fire department, the department of public works, and the firemen's auxiliary for their effort on Sunday.
During the time allotted for his comments, Mayor Kurt Lindstrom said he would be brief. He thanked the Department of Public Works and the Fire Department for their hard work, explaining that crews were out until about 4 p.m.
Village trustees also expressed their thanks. Amy Romanik said she echoed the mayor's thoughts.
She added, "Thank you also to the firemen's auxiliary. They were out there with hot coffee for the crews."
Trustee Nick Piccolo agreed with Lindstrom and Romanik. He said there were many people without power that day.
"They (the crews) did a great job cleaning it up," he said.
During the public comment section of the meeting, Caroline Mullin from the Hanover Little League, spoke to the board about an addition to the current building located on the playing field on Ward Street. The organization would like to add a room to the side of the building for more equipment storage for the baseball and softball teams.
This item was brought up to the board at its workshop by Romanik. Romanik explained the Little League wanted a donation from the village for concrete. At the workshop, the board members decided to tell Mullin a certificate to build was first necessary. Romanik did that when Mullin made her request.
The board, with Ben Peters absent, unanimously passed all items before it. These included:
Approving Brandon Donner as an active member of the Silver Creek Volunteer Fire Department
Hiring Lisa Adams as Clerk II part time at a rate of $10 per hour.
Approving a change order in the amount of $837.92 to repair existing water service for 118 Main St.
Approving a change order in the amount of $2496 for a field adjustment on Madison Avenue to move the water line from the ditch to the edge of the pavement.
Granting permission to the Hanover Silver Creek Garden Club for a garden fair on May 18, involving the use of the village gazebo from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Approving purchase of garbage bags for the village.
