Portland man charged after snowmobile hits home

January 25, 2013
The OBSERVER

SHERMAN - A snowmobile was an unwelcome guest at a home on 113 Kendrick St.

According to Chautauqua County sheriff's deputies, 53-year-old Charles M. Shaffer of Portland was charged with operating a snowmobile without insurance after his 1994 SkiDoo hit the Sherman home at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Shaffer told deputies the snowmobile's throttle became stuck and, in an attempt to get the snowmobile to stop, he struck a large snow pile, in which he was then ejected.

The snowmobile continued through the parking lot, crossing Kendrick Street and came to rest after striking the house. Shaffer and the occupants of the home were not injured and Shaffer was ticketed and will later be in Sherman court.
