JAMESTOWN - Parents for Parents, a support group for family members of people with special needs, will hold its next meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at The Resource Center's administrative offices, 200 Dunham Ave. in Jamestown.
Shannon Prince, who is an applied behavior science specialist and a nationally certified school psychologist, will discuss using a pyramid technique (the Ziggurat model) to ensure that the needs of children with disabilities are met by increasing their ability to learn new social skills. Learning social skills can be a challenging task for anyone with a disability, particularly for individuals on the autism spectrum. There may be a variety of factors affecting a child's ability to learn social skills. Prince will share tips for teaching social skills and will answer parents' questions regarding their children.
Parents, caregivers and all who support individuals with special needs are encouraged to attend this workshop. The regular parent support meeting will follow the presentation. Light refreshments will be served.
Parents for Parents is a monthly parent/caregiver support group organized by The Resource Center and Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc. The group, directed by a licensed master social worker, connects and supports families of individuals with special needs. The group offers support, information, speakers and presentations on topics pertaining to parents and caregivers in Chautauqua County. This is an opportunity for parents and caregivers to come together to discuss common triumphs, challenges, issues and concerns.
The Jamestown group meets the first Wednesday of each month. There also is a North County parent support group that meets the second Wednesday of each month at the Connections North Center, 10825 Bennett Road (Route 60) in Dunkirk. Prince will be the presenter for the Feb. 13 Dunkirk meeting.
New members are welcome to join Parents for Parents. Meetings are free. Parents desiring assistance with child care, respite or transportation should phone in advance to make arrangements. Those planning to attend are asked to call ahead so that organizers can have enough refreshments and children's activities on hand.
