Dunkirk man faces Leandra’s Law charge

A Dunkirk man has been charged following an accident Monday evening on Central Avenue. Dunkirk Police responded to the accident at 7:18 p.m. on Central Avenue near Bataan Avenue.

According to police, a vehicle operated by Jacob J. Wise, 33, of Lake Shore Drive East was traveling northbound on Central Avenue when he struck a parked car. The front passenger tire became detached from the vehicle, causing Wise's vehicle to skid into the front lawn at 856 Central Ave. Wise was allegedly intoxicated and had a 2-year-old child as a passenger.

Additionally, Wise was found to be in possession of baggies of cocaine, open containers of alcohol in the vehicle and he had a revoked driver's license. Wise was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger under Leandra's Law, DWI, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor, endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor, and possession of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Wise was arraigned by Dunkirk City Court Judge Walter Drag Tuesday and remanded to Chautauqua County Jail on $10,000 bail and $20,000 property. The child was taken to Brooks Memorial Hospital by a family member as a precaution.
