Young accused of 'double dipping' with STAR exemption

March 7, 2013
The OBSERVER

Since 2001, New York state Sen. Cathy Young, R-Olean, hasn't followed the rules for the STAR program, according to an Albany Times Union report.

Young, who said her husband is the one responsible, claimed a property tax exemption on her North Greenbush condo and her home in Cattaraugus County, the report says.

The New York State School Tax Relief Program (STAR) provides partial exemptions for households that earn less than $500,000 annually. The program, however, has gone mostly unchecked by the state up to this point. Some of those who have taken advantage of the program have done so by either illegally subdividing rooming houses or claiming vacation homes or weekend residences as primary homes.

See Friday's OBSERVER for the complete report.
