Lefort in 9th after 1st day

NAPERVILLE, ILL. - Fredonia State senior Spencer Lefort is in ninth place after four events of the men's heptathlon at the NCAA Division III Track & Field championship meet Friday.

Lefort, the ECAC Division III champ and SUNYAC record holder, earned 2,619 points while competing in the 60-meter dash, the long jump, the shot put and the high jump.

He moved up the standings in the final event Friday when he cleared 1.96 meters (6-feet, 5-inches) in the high jump, second-best among the 13 competitors, to earn 767 points.

His also earned 749 points in the 60 dash with a time of 7.39 seconds, 584 points in the long jump with a performance of 5.99 meters (19' 8") and recorded a personal-best shot put of 10.55 meters (34' 7.5") for 519 points.

Eric Larson, a sophomore from Central, has 2,949 points to lead the competition, which culminates Saturday with the 60 high hurdles, the pole vault, and the 1,000.

Lefort also earned a USTFCCCA regional honor recently, as he was named Division III Men's Field Athlete of the Year for the Atlantic Region.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association made the announcement Wednesday along with other regional awards for athletes and coaches.

Lefort won the 2013 ECAC heptathlon championship last Saturday with a score of 4,946, which seeds him third heading into the NCAA championships. He holds the ECAC Division III meet record and the SUNYAC record in the heptathlon.
