In today's politically charged atmosphere many local communities are having difficulty recruiting good qualified candidates to run for office.
In this year's village of Fredonia election, two very qualified women have come forward and are willing to give of their time and energy. I'm talking about Susan Mackay and Phyllis Jones.
Susan Mackay served previously as trustee when I served as mayor. I always could count on Susan to take on the most difficult assignments with outstanding results. Susan was instrumental in securing our Main Street grant and several other grants. She also updated our comprehensive plan and was a leader in Festivals Fredonia and the farmers market. If I needed a difficult job to be done, I knew I could count on Susan Mackay.
Phyllis Jones is another highly qualified candidate. She has served for five years as zoning board member, a thankless, yet critical position in the village. She's been very active in the Rotary and served as its president.
I have known both of these women for many years and would recommend both for the position of trustee. The village will be well served. No matter what your party affiliation, I would encourage you to cast your vote on Monday.
Frank Pagano is a former Fredonia mayor.
