A Dunkirk man has been turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Puerto Rico following an arrest Sunday evening. Dunkirk Police arrested Eric Johan Garcia-Rivas, 26, of 125 King St., who is a federal fugitive from justice.
A Dunkirk Police officer spotted a male acting suspiciously in the area of Fifth and Leopard streets at 6:10 p.m.
According to police, the male was trying to hide his face from police as well as other evasive actions when police stopped to question him.
Through investigation, the male was identified as Garcia-Rivas who is wanted by the FBI on a federal indictment out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances.
The federal grand jury indictment resulted from a joint effort spearheaded by the FBI San Juan Field Office.
It is alleged Garcia-Rivas was part of a violent street gang, which used violence, weapons, threats and intimidation to run its drug distribution ring out of a public housing project.
Garcia-Rivas was held at Dunkirk Police until being turned over to federal authorities Monday morning.
Dunkirk Police was assisted by FBI offices in Jamestown and San Juan on this case.
