Federal fugitive nabbed in city

A Dunkirk man has been turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Puerto Rico following an arrest Sunday evening. Dunkirk Police arrested Eric Johan Garcia-Rivas, 26, of 125 King St., who is a federal fugitive from justice.

A Dunkirk Police officer spotted a male acting suspiciously in the area of Fifth and Leopard streets at 6:10 p.m.

According to police, the male was trying to hide his face from police as well as other evasive actions when police stopped to question him.

Garcia-Rivas

Through investigation, the male was identified as Garcia-Rivas who is wanted by the FBI on a federal indictment out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances.

The federal grand jury indictment resulted from a joint effort spearheaded by the FBI San Juan Field Office.

It is alleged Garcia-Rivas was part of a violent street gang, which used violence, weapons, threats and intimidation to run its drug distribution ring out of a public housing project.

Garcia-Rivas was held at Dunkirk Police until being turned over to federal authorities Monday morning.

Dunkirk Police was assisted by FBI offices in Jamestown and San Juan on this case.
