WESTFIELD - For Connie and Jack Thayer almost everyday is Pie Day. The couple own Portage Pie at 42 Portage St. in Westfield. Connie and Jack work long days to create homemade pies with the freshest ingredients.
Their business is currently open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., so Jack and Connie spend most of their time getting ready to make pie, making pie or selling pie.
Yesterday was also pi day. In mathematics, Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. (Or circumference divided by diameter). Because 3.14 is an approximate equivalent of Pi, March 14 is called Pi Day. Many schools have special mathematical events, and there is a website dedicated to the celebration, www.piday.org.

Connie and Jack Thayer, owners of Portage Pie in Westfield, show an example of their product.
The Thayers celebrated the occasion by offering free samples of their pies accompanied by coffee at their shop. Connie offered a plate containing a sample of three types of pies - key lime, grape and strawberry chiffon and told people to help themselves to coffee. She said that by afternoon about a dozen people came in.
Nancy McCormack is a frequent customer who came in to see what pies were available.
She didn't realize that free samples were being given out and sat down to enjoy the samples after deciding what she wanted to take home.
Anne Moelk also came in to make a purchase. She said, "This is one of my favorite spots. Connie makes great pies."
Connie, McCormack and Moelk discussed the pies, the ingredients that are the best, and hoped that the local fruit would be good this year.
Connie said most people knew about the samples through word of mouth and the business' facebook page.
Portage Pie observed Pie Day last year, and it drew attention to the business. Those who knew what "Pi" was enjoyed the word play of their sign. Everyone, whether understanding the reference or not, enjoys the pie.
