Bishop Richard Malone celebrated Mass with the children of Northern Chautauqua Catholic School recently. Several area priests concelebrated with the Bishop: Fr. Charles Zadora, Fr. Matt Nycz, Fr. Walter Werbicki, Fr. Dennis Riter and Fr. Joseph Zalacca, canonical administrator of NCCS. The children of the school participated in several ways. The Liturgy of the Word was proclaimed by Madeline Gokey while Eric Baumgartner read the petitions. Altars servers included Bryan Dempsey, Monica Pokoj and Michael Filice. Hannah Gullo and Grace Pucciarelli assisted the Bishop as mace and crosier bearers. Bishop Malone involved the children in his homily focusing on the three types of prayer. He encouraged everyone to use the time of Lent to grow in their prayer life. The singing at Mass was enhanced by the music ministry of Andrea and Tom Gestwicki, David Bolen and the Select Chorus of NCCS directed by Rebecca Cicelski.
Following Mass, Bishop Malone visited the school and joined the faculty and guests, including Mayor Dolce of Dunkirk and Mayor Keefe of Fredonia in a lunch catered by Mike Porpiglia and sponsored by the Home School Association of NCCS. As lunch was completed Bishop Malone was presented with a plant that had been incorporated into the flower arrangement provided by the NCCS Board of Trustees at Mass. The plant will be cared for by the current kindergarten class of NCCS and they will send Bishop Malone a report on their progress at the conclusion of each school year.
Bishop Malone then toured the school guided by eighth-grade students Brittney Lombardo and Daniel Barnes. Each class was visited and interacted with the Bishop. He also paused to bless the new banners in the school gym recognizing the deceased members of the NCCS Family.
The children and staff at NCCS welcomed Bishop Richard Malone during his recent visit.
